This film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s short story Tony Takitani is an elegant and poignant story of emotional attachment and loss. Set against the background of post-war and modern-day Japan, the story follows Tony Takitani and his young wife, Eiko, whose obsession with designer clothes and accessories is so strong that it ends up devouring her. However, her fixation is not treated as evidence of superficiality or moral decline; rather, it is an inquiry of complex human emotions such as pleasure, longing, intimacy and letting go.
