From being homeless to becoming a super star. This is the story of the American artist Jean Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), and three decades after his passing, Basquiat’s works are still highly regarded among contemporary artists and designers. Not only did he become famous for his artworks, Basquiat also became well known for his sense of style. Having a taste for Armani suits and Issey Miyake’s geometrical forms, Basquiat was well known on the 80’s fashion scene. By mixing high street fashion with worn-out jeans and sportswear, his style expressed the collision between his origin and present.
Instructed by Julian Schnabel, the movie Basquiat from 1996, dramatizes the life of Basquiat, from his life on the streets to his collaboration with the famous pop artist Andy Warhol. Starring actors includes Jeffery Wright, Michael Wincott, Gary Oldman and David Bowie.
